Electric Delivery: E-trikes are up for a test in the UK

The carbon footprint produced by logistics and delivery industry has a big impact on health and well-being of current and more importantly next generations. However, now more than ever we can notice the major industry leaders, changing their environmental policies and introducing innovative solutions to tackle the negative impacts. Royal Mail has recently launched a trial of electric delivery vehicles.

Electric Delivery Vehicles

Royal mail has launched the test fleet of electric vehicles for their deliveries. The fleet consists of 8 Italian-made e-Trikes. They are powered by a combination of green technologies, such as: solar, battery, pedal and brake technology. Pedals are assisted by a battery-operated motor, recharged by mains power, aided by solar panels on the trike.

Such vehicles will be an optimal choice for carrying the majority of parcels. Additionally, it is a good choice for postcards and letters, since they can be used both within roads and most cycling paths.

If such technology will be scaled and implemented throughout the UK, it is likely to assure faster, more efficient and greener deliveries for the future.

Trial Coverage

The current trial will be active for half a year and will cover at least 4 UK cities. The conclusion of this trial will determine whether such electric delivery vehicles have a future within Royal Mail and if they will be expanded throughout the UK.

Change of Company Stance

David Gold, director of public affairs & policy at Royal Mail, has sent a clear message in regards of the environmental policy and concerns Royal Mail has: “We are committed to making changes to our operations which reduce our environmental impact whilst ensuring we continue to meet customer expectations.”

“Alongside our ongoing transformation programme and the introduction of electric vans in locations across our business, this trial is part of a programme of initiatives across our business that will ensure we can continue to deliver letters and parcels safely, efficiently and responsibly,” he added.
